KEY POST ONE-RESEARCH

KEY BLOG POST – RESEARCH
With having all these lectures, talks, discussions and placements I have been given a lot of information about different aspects of teaching and about how to share my art experience with others.
The key points I have found in my reflection to my practice is that most of my work would appeal to more of the disability children and people with learning difficulties because I have found that children or adults with learning difficulties focus more towards the arts. My art work is very multisensory and hands on and sometimes this is what the children need to express themselves. For them it’s a form of communication.

Art is all about expressing yourself and what I have found doing art within the DACA you have to do art in a certain way. This frustrated me as an artist because I found art should never have certain limits.

When I went to DACA on my placement and I was talking to some of the students about what kind of materials I use they seemed amazed and shocked. They have never hear of any students using these types of materials before. With the students being shocked by my work, I demonstrated to students some simple techniques and processes. The students have never been showed these techniques before and seeing the student manipulate the simple techniques in different ways influenced me as an artist. I was getting showed all these different points.
I thought I wouldn’t enjoy teaching the students however what I did enjoy doing was showing the students different processes. I found intriguing because they just seemed amazed by all these different styles and techniques. From this and having the discussion about the people with learning difficulties has strongly influenced my idea within my development because this was my most exciting time. I found that you can influences these children and adults with your art. You almost build a bond with the students and having that influences them which influences my work because of my work being all about multisensory.
I want to influence the students with the materials I use. They influences my art work in loads of unique ways and the influences are strong and that is what some people need with learning difficulties. They need that strong influence to help them to have an understanding in what is going on and how to express themselves within the art materials.
The students with learning difficulties and disabilities really interests me because of the fact you have to try harder. I feel like some of the students will push you to your limits and that’s what I want to achieve. I want to be pushed all the time because it helps me grow as a person and an artists.
I want to influence the students in different way but use art and materials as the main key points. All these points are what I want to explore further because this all link to my art practice because of the professional context behind it. My professional context is all to do with materials and senses which links with the learning difficulties as these are what some of the students use to commutate.

LEARNING DIFFICULTIES

Working with people with learning difficulties

Having this lecture/ discussion about students with learning difficulties really interested to me because I have worked with students before with these difficulties and what I was doing with them was art related. One of the reasons I liked working with the students with learning difficulties is that they were always keen to learn different way. They wanted to do the work unlike some of the other students. I wanted to help the students in the most way I could. The way the students with learning difficulties respond to you and how they relate to different materials amazes me because all my practice artwork relates to this interaction using the sense and most students with learning difficulties respond or work within the same way. Over all this is one of the main subjects that has stood out to me more that teaching and mentoring the DACA students.

YEAR SEVENS

YEAR SEVEN TEXTILES

This lesson was much different to any of the others I had been in before. Year sevens are all keen to learn and they are all jumpy and they love asking questions. I have to admit that I thought I wouldn’t like the year sevens because of the fact they ask too many questions however you can make this benefit you as a teacher. By creating little tasks for the year sevens help them stay keen and interested in the lesson because one of the down falls of year sevens is that they get bored easy. One of the opportunity I got to do in this class was to calm down the students and get them to pay attention to me at the front of the class. By counting down from five they knew that they has to be quite and wait for me to tell them there next task. The good thing about this was that this quite technique works on year sevens by defiantly wouldn’t work with A-level students because they are to mature.

WEEK TWO

YEAR 10 PHOTOGRAPHY

In this lesson I went to one student and asked if he enjoyed photography however he was more interested in his PE lesson and exam. I tried to get him motivated in his work and kept asking question. The student works was really interested and the theme was apart and together I could link with this student because some of the photography he was done is what am trying to do at a degree level this made the student shocked however she showed me ways and quick techniques of how to get more clean and crisp images. The key with year 10 students was motivation they think they know everything and say that they don’t care about their work and the trick was to get them motivated.

SHADWOING

SHADWOING STUDENTS

Today we had to follow students in different class rather than talking and mentoring them in different art classes. I was placed in a year nine science lesson with Mr Byrne however they were doing a revision so they didn’t really have much to say so I took notes on how the teacher got the class working and interactive with the lesson. The class were quite good and quiet they were year nine so they didn’t really misbehaviour. However in the afternoon I was placed in a year eights maths class. This lesson was very different to the others that I have witnessed. Year eights themselves are always up to mischief and testing the bounders of their teachers. The class had some children that were misbehaving in the lesson and I found that teachers have different ways of dealing with different types of behaviour. However I was sat near one of the students that kept misbehaving and saying things he shouldn’t have been. Then when I was sat next to him and helped explain how to do his work he settled down. I hated the way the students would put themselves down saying that they are stupid and they don’t understand what the teacher is saying. However they don’t help themselves by shouting and misbehaving in the class when the teacher is talking. When I sat and broke down what they had to do they seem to get it really quick. I found that some of the students try to show off but by sitting them down and making them realise they have more potential to do well. When they got the right answers they were so happy with themselves this was rewarding.

PROCESS

A-LEVEL PHOTOGRAPHY

Within this lesson we were paired up with a student to help them create different samples to add to their own work. I was paired with a girl who had a lot of photography that related to surfaces and pattern. The work was really detailed however she needed some practice samples so that she has shown within her work that she has step outside her comfit zone. I showed her new ways of printing instead of using normal paper. I wanted to get the girl thinking about news ways of using different materials to benefit her ideas. Also I showed and taught that you don’t have to just leave your photography flat. I taught her that you can use different processes to manipulate your work in different ways. The processes she chose to use was burning the plastic to create these odd shapes. These odd shapes she created ended up being an installation of her photograph. The student hadn’t done anything like this and by showing her that you can do anything within art and taught her that her art work should have no limits was so inspiring to see.

SECOND DAY

YEAR 10 ART

With yesterday going well by showing how to do different techniques I took that same approach today by showing a child in year 10 fine art how to manipulate paper in folding and how to thread needles quick. In this lesson I felt really appreciated because the girl I was helping was amazed on how quick I could stitch and how easy it was to learn. I told her that I have been doing it for so long it just comes easy.

DACA

PLACEMENT AT DACA

On my first day of placement I was a bit undecided on how I would feel about mentoring some of the sixth formers because I knew how I felt when people were trying to help me and the fact I didn’t want their help. However I found that some of the sixth formers wanted our input on their work. A student that was interested in learning new skills from us was Ella Louise, we taught her some textiles techniques that she will keep forever. Ella Louise now has these skills to manipulate in any way she wants because we have taught her the basics. I enjoyed sharing what I have learnt with others because everyone has a different outcome and this influences me within my practice.

Talking to some of the teachers that were there, they spoke about how this placement is good experiences. They also said that it is good to experiences different ages to teach because different ages have different inputs on how they interact with the lesson.

This is a list of what I should look out for at my work experience at Darwen high school.
·         Body language (how they keep the attention of the children)
·         How they dress/ what colours they wear
·         How they talk to the children (such as what tone they use in different situations)
·         Make the classroom enjoyable/ inviting
·         Keep the children keen
·         How much eye contact they give the children
·         How they react to the children that need discipline (how they address it)
·         What happens when technology doesn’t work ( such as computers, power points, sounds)
·         How they get the children to take notes (books, worksheets, loose paper, colour paper)
·         Do they use group work and they find it useful in the classroom

ART THERAPY

Art Therapy

Learning about art therapy was interesting because I got to know about another way of using art as a commutation. This could be used as to make us feel better or art therapy could be a psychology intervention. What linked to most to me with art therapy was that it is used to help improve people’s mental health and the way I work I have found is that it is very therapeutic as I repeat a lot of my actions which is called repetition to create my artwork. Also I work with a lot of multiples in repetition and I have found myself in trances creating my art work because I get lost within my work. This is my way of expressing myself. I found this out by listening to others and I want to help other discover ways of helping themselves deal with their problems.

LEARNING STYLES

The Seven Styles of Learning

1.    VISUAL (SPATIAL):
You prefer using pictures, images and spatial understanding

2.    AURAL (AUDITORY-MUSICAL)
You prefer using sound and music

3.    VERBAL (LINGUISTIC)
You prefer using words, both in speech and writing

4.    PHYSICAL (KINESTHETIC)
You prefer using your body, hands and sense of touch

5.    LOGICAL (MATHEMATICAL)
You prefer using logic reasoning and systems

6.    SOCIAL (INTERPERSONAL)
You prefer to learn in groups or with other people

7.    SOLITARY (INTRAPERSONAL)
You prefer to work alone and use self-study

When looking through all the learning styles I didn’t realise how many different ones there was. I know people have many different ways of reacting to actives but having the learning styles broken up to these seven it more easier to help people as you influence them in ways that work better for them in their learning styles.

The style that links to me to most is the PHYSICAL (KINESTHETIC) as it is all about using your hands and the sense of touch to explain. This links very much to my art work because within my artwork it is very much about using your senses such as sight, touch and smell. The colours I use which are neon which catch your attention and then the materials I use differ from soft fabrics to jelly. However the way I manipulate the materials change the way you react to them. Which effect the sense and the way I work and learn.

PREPARING

Preparing for workshops

The main part of teaching is planning your workshops and making sure everything goes to plan or you have a backup plan in case something does go wrong. There are many different parts to planning that I didn’t know such as to every hour you teach there should be an hour of planning behind it. With planning I found it hard to break down how long each active should take because everyone is different and people react to actives in different ways. That’s why were learnt and discussed what ways you can take to influence your planning. By breaking planning down I was able to reflect more on about the way of teaching.

CHILDREN PROCTECTION

Unit X- EDUCATION
Learning about the education system I had to know about children protection and the rules for training with younger and older adults. I had to know the rules for my protection and the people around. I benefited from listening and learning about the systems because it prepared me for going into placements and schools. I had to know everything about how schools work and what I could and couldn’t do.
